Exponential Growth for the Zero Energy Ready Home Program

Exponential Growth for the Zero Energy Ready Home Program

Exponential Growth

2024 was a banner year for the Zero Energy Ready Home program seeing the most single-family home certifications in the program’s 11-year history. In 2024, nearly 15,000 homes were certified, more than double the previous record of 6,500 certified homes in 2023. The record year also pushed the program over 32,000 certified homes.  National production builders such as Beazer Homes and K. Hovnanian becoming ZERH partners contributed substantially to the growth in 2024, but with 20 different states experiencing a 50% increase in certified ZERH homes the program is garnering more attention from builders and homebuyers across the country. With a nearly 125% increase in certifications from 2023-2024, multifamily and manufactured housing program versions available, and the continued rebates and incentives from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, the ZERH program is primed for continued success into 2025 and beyond.

Some highlights from the 2024 calendar year include:

  • Maryland (1,800) and Texas (1,792) led the way with the most certified ZERH homes in 2024. New Jersey (1,253), Pennsylvania (1,222) and Arizona (1,132) all topped the previous record number of certifications for a state set by New Jersey in 2023 (1,081).

  • The first (and 17 other) certified ZERH home was built in Oklahoma, narrowing the list to only 4 states without a certified ZERH home (Alaska, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming).

  • 53 certified ZERH homes were completed in Hawaii, a state that previously had only 2 certified homes.

  • With over 1,100 certified homes, Arizona (3826) closed the gap on Colorado (3860) for the state with the most all-time ZERH homes.

In addition to the growth numbers experienced for single-family homes in 2024, the ZERH Manufactured Homes Pilot Program also had a successful year. Over 21,500 ZERH Manufactured Homes were certified in 2024 as well as 52 Manufactured Housing Plant Partners. To be eligible for ZERH certification under the Manufactured Home Pilot Program, both homes and plants must be certified to ZERH Manufactured Home program requirements and inspected by a third-party quality assurance provider.
